ROMOLA O. LUCAS
I started to practice law on my own for the first time in 2009 right after the stock market crashed and I was laid off from my position as a Commercial Real Estate Associate at a large law firm in Philadelphia. I packed up, moved to New York, and bounced around as a freelance attorney for a few years, working on many different projects before finding work again as a Commercial Real Estate attorney, this time, at a large New York firm. Growing to completely dislike that particular grind, I decided to go out on my own. Start my own practice. Work for myself.
Over time, I have managed to carve out a space to practice in, where I’m doing exactly what I want to do, and how I want to do it. I no longer practice commercial real estate, but draft, negotiate, and review contracts for many clients and friends who are artists – writers, dancers, filmmakers, poets, music artists. I help people start businesses, whether they are for profit or not-for-profit, and continue to work with them as general counsel after start-up. I identify as queer and support LGBTQ+ clients either directly or by referring them to another supportive attorney. I represent seniors and veterans whenever I can.
I am a co-founder of the Caribbean filmmaking collective, The Caribbean Film Academy, now Third Horizon. We put on the annual Third Horizon Film Festival in Miami, platforming Caribbean films. When I’m not practicing law and enjoying Caribbean films, I travel, read, hike, bike, play badminton and work on my photography skills.
